May 1st - July 24th- At the New Iceland Heritage Museum - "Stolen Dreams: Portraits of the World's Working Children". This travelling exhibit from the Manitoba Museum will be available in the Stefan J. Stefanson Gallery. Seventy framed photos, by occupational health physician, Dr. David L. Parker, documents the varieties of labour carried out by children in various areas of the world including the USA and Canada during the late 19th century. The comprehensive exhibit depicts how this contentious issue was addressed in the early 20th century and how Canadians are now working to address the issues of international child labour. October 21st - The Gimli Icelandic Canadian Society, New Iceland Heritage Museum and the Consulate of Iceland invite you to the annual "Walk to the Rock" - a commemorative walk along the shores of Lake Winnipeg to the site where the first Icelandic immigrants arrived. Join us as we celebrate the establishment of New Iceland, a unique chapter in Canadian History. Starts at the museum, 94-1st Avenue, Gimli. Return to the museum for refreshments. This is the 25th anniversary of the first production of Carol Sheild's first published play, "Departures and Arrivals." The play includes twenty-two vignettes set in an airport departure and arrival lounge, which captures a spectrum of travelers awakening to contemporary limbo. July 3 - 5 "TUMBLEWEED" From Virden presents: "Lafferty's Wake" by Susan Turlish. A the Aspire Theatre (air conditioned). The play takes place in Rory's Pub in Ballyslattery, County Donegal, Ireland. Charlie Lafferty's widow is surrounded by her daughter and son-in-law, the family priest and Rory, the bar keeper. Lafferty wanted "no keening and wailing at me wake". August 14 - 16 "New Stage Productions" from Winnipeg offer two plays: "Hide and Go Creak" by Dale Watts. At the Aspire Theatre (air conditioned). George Anderson, suffering from ill health and a failing memory, is involuntarily committed to a retirement home by his inheritance-focused children. George meets Dickie, a happy-go-lucky, but thoroughly charming rogue, whose favorite pastime is tweaking the nose of Maggie, the bureaucratic retirement home administrator. Esther, Dickie's friend and caregiver, helps Dickie bring George out of his doldrums. When George learns Dickie and Esther seem to have discovered a formula for perpetual youth, it turns his initial cynicism into optimism. Tickets $10 avail. at Tergesen's or at the door. August 14 - 16 "Sudoko Fever" by Ron Blicq. At the Aspire Theatre (air conditioned). Sudoku Fever, written by Manitoba playwright Ron Blicq, is a light comedy peopled by a mildly eccentric family. Regan is nearing graduation from high school in Minnedosa and wants to enroll in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manitoba. But her mother is adamantly opposed to the plan and wants Regan to stay home and work in her realty business. The only person to support Regan is her grandfather, but he is overwhelmed by the clearly articulated views of Regan's mother, grandmother and aunt. Yet, he also can be devious and finds a way to support Regan. The conflicts that emerge become the primary focus of the play.
